French toast is a dish made of sliced bread (in this recipe I used Challah bread) soaked in beaten eggs and typically milk, then pan fried.
In US French toast was popularly served in railroad dining cars of the early and mid-20th century.
The Santa Fe was especially known for its French toast, and most of the railroads provided recipes of these and other dining car offerings to the public as a promotional feature.
In the UK, it is commonly known as eggy bread or occasionally as Gypsy toast and is served as both a sweet and as a savory dish.
If you would like to use Challah bread for your toasts and you are interested in making Challah bread on your own please watch this video:
‘How to make Challah Bread’
For these French toasts from Challah bread you will need:
1 Challah bread
4 eggs + 2 egg yolks
1/2 cup of milk
1/4 cup of cream
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp orange zest
8 tbsp of butter for frying (2 tbsp for each pair of toasts)
TIP: Clean your frying pan after each pair of toasts as butter will burn, get bitter and ruin your toasts
