For those of you seeking a profound expression of terroir in their white wine look no further than the 2018 Oceano Chardonnay. Winemaker Marbue Marke crafts a racy, mineral-laden expression of Chardonnay from the Spanish Springs Vineyard in San Luis Obispo, just a stone’s throw from the Pacific Ocean. The vineyard’s cool maritime climate coupled with its mix of limestone and sandstone soils delivers Chardonnay with uncommon depth, complexity, and freshness. The nose is alive with lemon chiffon, flowers, and sea spray, leading to cool melon and citrus flavors typically reserved for a 1er Cru Chablis. The vibrant finish is framed with cool acidity and hints of citrus zest, making the Oceano an ideal pairing for shellfish, in particular Scallops or Dungeness Crab which has just come into season.
