Wine with Andy: Nature vs Nurture
Episode 4 – Botrytis

In this tasting we’re looking at a couple of things the winemaker can do in the vineyard to change the wine’s flavour. One of the wines is picked early, like the first tasting of this series; the other is left on the vine to rot – but a very special type of rot!

Wines for this episode:
– Hunter/Barossa Valley Semillon (11.5% alcohol or lower)
– Botrytis Semillon (look out for wines from New South Wales in Australia or Sauternes in France)

I tasted:
– Brokenwood Thompson’s Road Hunter Valley Semillon (Waitrose, £10)
– Waitrose No 1 Sauternes, Château Suduiraut (Waitrose, £17 for 37.5cl)

Wines for next time:
– Burgundy Pinot Noir
– Beaujolais

I’ll be tasting:
– Cave de Lugny Bourgogne (Waitrose, £12)
– Dominic Piron Beaujolais-Villages (Waitrose, £12)
