COVID-19 consumed our year but when we look back on 2020 it will be the year of endings, yes, but also brilliant reinventions. In a year of restaurant compromises due to the pandemic, there was no such feeling of settling for something easier, simpler at 12th Ave Grill, which reopened its doors just before Thanksgiving as 12th Ave Grill & DeliCafe, with a new casual, affordable take-out deli component and indoor or outdoor parking lot dining.

While the deli component shown in this video is the phase I of the reopening, the main dining room is slated to reopen Christmas week with more of a seafood and raw bar focus.

We were amazed by a preview of new chef Mauro Gramuglia’s seafood charcuterie platter. The chef brings with him the Old World traditions of Europe and a dedication to craft that has him curing his own seafood and meats, and spending three days on ensuring even his French fries are lighter and crisper than just about any other in town.

Because of the time-consuming nature of the housemade charcuterie, only limited quantities will be available for the holidays beginning Dec. 18, as follows, and pre-ordering is highly recommended:

Seafood Charcuterie Board
Hawaiian Big Eye Ahi Prosciutto, Ono Bresaola, Broadbill Ham and Smoked Ahi Spread ($49); items subject to change with availability.

House made Meats & Cheese Board
Housemade Norcina sausage, smoked duck prosciutto, liver pate, housemade burrata and assorted pickles and olives ($49); items subject to change.

The restaurant is also offering Christmas and New Year dinners for two, plus holiday lunch boxes for the new remote or distanced office holiday party. lunch box will feature a small garden salad and guests’ choice (ordered ahead) of pastrami french toast or 12th Ave BLT sandwiches, and house triple chocolate-candy cane cookies. The cost for each box is $25, with a minimum order of 20.

While we were there, the rep for JuneShine hard kombucha cider happened to be making a delivery, so we had the opportunity to try “Midnight Painkiller” with green tea, honey, coconut, pineapple, orange, nutmeg and activated charcoal. It was so light and refreshing, and a perfect digestive aid. You can find it at Tamura’s, Whole Foods Market, Foodland and other markets.
