Mussels and fries is considered the national dish of Belgium. This classic, famous Belgian meal is served in various types of eateries, such as friteries or frituurs, cafes, bistros and restaurants. It is also popular in The Netherlands and France, especially touristic places frequented by Belgians.

The best seasons to eat fresh mussels is during Autumn-Winter, following the “R” rule. That means, in months that contain the letter “R” such as September, October, November, December, January, February and March.

We have never tried cooking this dish at home, this is our first attempt to do so. It’s good to discover that the entire dish is available for sale at vending machines. How convenient is that! We also discovered a wine shop with a vending machine too.

It is surprisingly easy to prepare this classic meal at home. We highly recommend you to try it too. Here’s a video capturing our first-time experience. Hope you enjoy!
