In the neighborhood known as “Port Vieux,” many discoveries await, including a former harbor turned into a popular beach, and a statue of the Virgin overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It was designed to anchor a sea wall France’s last emperor, Napoleon III, once planned to build to protect a new harbor, le Port du Refuge. Things did not go as planned, yet the virgin remains, greeting modern-day sailors on their way home.
Note: The lone cross on the rock I point out in the second half of the video marks the site of a shipwreck in 1893.
