Summary:
1. Keeps Your Eyes Healthy: You were probably told that eating carrots can help improve your vision. Guess what? So can wine. Resveratrol in red wine may help prevent vision loss by stopping out-of-control blood vessel growth in the eyes. This increased growth is what usually causes age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, the leading causes of blindness in Americans over the age of 50.
2. Helps Prevent Sunburn: Who knew a glass of wine could help you fend off sunburn? Evidently, wine and other grape derivatives can help protect your skin from the damaging effects of UV rays. When UV rays make contact with the skin, they activate what’s called reactive oxygen species or ROS. One study discovered that some flavonoids, or polyphenolic substances extracted from grapes, can reduce the number of ROS that form on the skin.
3. Lowers Breast Cancer Risk: Regularly drinking most alcoholic drinks increases the risk of breast cancer. However, red wine intake in moderation has the opposite effect. Researchers found that chemicals in the skins and seeds of red grapes reduce estrogen levels while raising testosterone in premenopausal women. This results in a lower risk of developing breast cancer. Researchers emphasized that it is not just the red wine that has the beneficial compounds, but its raw material, red grape.
4. Gives You A Longer Life: Red wine is loaded with Resveratrol which is a powerful antioxidant that can be found in grape skin and red grape juice. Antioxidants help your body fight off free radicals that can damage cells and organs.
5. Controls Blood Sugar Levels: The skin of red grapes, a rich source of red wine’s natural compound resveratrol may actually help diabetics regulate their blood sugar. In a study participants who took a 250 milligram resveratrol supplement once a day for three months had lower blood glucose levels than those who didn’t take the pill. Plus, resveratrol takers also had significant decreases in total cholesterol and systolic blood pressure. Researchers suspect that resveratrol may help stimulate insulin secretion and activate a protein that helps regulate glucose and insulin sensitivity.
