Our family celebrates four birthdays within three weeks of each other, so we usually take a big family trip, known as our birthday bash. Since we were in Europe for this past birthday bash we thought we would cross off another country on the kids’ list and celebrate our birthdays in the French region of Alsace. The Alsace region runs along the Rhine River and is made up of the most quaint and romantic little villages. The scenery is absolutely beautiful and it is home to wonderful wineries and exquisite culinary delights. We broke up our visit by staying in the beautiful city of Colmar and day visiting Strasbourg and the villages of Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé. Fun fact: Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé are the inspirational basis for Belle’s “little town” in the classic tale of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and you can even check out our visit to the fountain in the video above. In addition to walking around (and eating our way through) these beautiful Alsatian villages, we also took a trip to La Montagne des Singes, or “Monkey Mountain,” which is a conservation home to over 200 Barbary macaque monkeys. The kids loved being able to watch them interact with one another and hand feed them with their beloved popcorn. All in all, this was a wonderful first adventure to France and a great way to celebrate our family birthday bash.
