“Every student that we have sponsored has provided huge thanks for the opportunity (to be a part of Students on Ice). It has opened their eyes and exposed them to more of the world, to more of the conservation type efforts, environmental efforts, research efforts. And in quite a few cases it has encouraged the students to go on to post secondary education and helped to guide them to a field of study.”
Theresa Baikie, Impact and Benefit Agreement Coordinator with the Nunatsiavut Government, speaks about the importance of Students on Ice expeditions for youth. She highlights the value of bringing together youth from Nunatsiavut with youth from around the world to learn about the Arctic and about each other.
“I think it is important to have youth of different cultures, together with Indigenous youth and regardless of where they are from, they tend to realize that despite their different lifestyles, they do have common interests and common issues.”
The Nunatsiavut Government and the Nunatsiavut Harvesting Compensation Committee provide full scholarships for youth from the Nunatsiavut region of Labrador to participate in SOI’s Arctic expeditions.

Theresa Baikie, coordonnatrice de l’entente sur les répercussions et les avantages avec le gouvernement du Nunatsiavut, parle de l’importance des expéditions Students on Ice pour les jeunes. Elle souligne la valeur de réunir des jeunes du Nunatsiavut avec des jeunes du monde entier pour en apprendre davantage sur l’Arctique et les uns sur les autres.
«Je pense qu’il est important d’avoir des jeunes de cultures différentes, ainsi que des jeunes autochtones et peu importe d’où ils viennent, ils ont tendance à se rendre compte que malgré leurs modes de vie différents, ils ont des intérêts et des problèmes communs.»
Le gouvernement du Nunatsiavut et la Comité de rémunération des récoltes du Nunatsiavut offrent des bourses complètes aux jeunes de la région du Nunatsiavut au Labrador pour participer aux expéditions SOI dans l’Arctique.
