Baked Steak Fries that are crispy on the outside and soft and creamy on the inside. They’re easy to make once you know how! The secret to making these incredible crispy fries is a cornstarch paste and just 3 tablespoons of oil. Here’s how to make french fries:
Baked Steak Fries Ingredients
4 – 5 russet potatoes
6 tablespoons of avocado or olive oil
spray oil
5 tablespoons cornstarch
1 1/2 cup water
salt for seasoning
Baked Steak Fries Directions
Begin by preheating your oven to 435 degrees, and place the rack on the lowest position so it’s closest to the heat source. Wash the potatoes throughly. I’m making steak fries, and slicing the potatoes first in half, and then in 1/4 inch thick slices. Cut off any bruising or brown marks.
Mix up 5 tablespoons of cornstarch with 11/2 cups of water, and whisk to dissolve. Microwave for 30 seconds, stir and continue microwaving in 30 second intervals until the mixture begins to thicken, about a minute and a half.
Let cool slightly. While it cools, spray a baking sheet with vegetable spray, and rub it across the sheet to coat. Pour on 3 tablespoons of avocado or olive oil, and tip the sheet to spread the oil evenly.
Pour about half of the mixture over the potatoes, use your fingers to spread the mixture across all sides on the potato slices, I like to keep it a little thick… then place the slices onto the baking sheet, keeping some distance between the potato slices.
Spray a sheet of aluminum foil with cooking spray, then cover the sheet pan tightly. Bake for about 12 minutes in the 435 degree oven. Remove the foil, and bake for about 15 – 18 more minutes until the fries are crispy on the the bottom.
Turn the fries, and bake for 15 – 18 more minutes. Salt liberally and enjoy!
Note about oven temperature: 435 was the right setting for our oven, 425 took much longer to brown, and at 450 the fries browned a bit too fast, adjust based on how hot your oven runs.
