Cheers!
Both Chris and I have had French 75 cocktails before with mixed results. Sometimes they’re delicious. Other times, well, something is just so amiss, so amiss, as in almost undrinkable. As spring makes way for summer, I’ve been wanting to have this tasty drink (done right) again.
I was a bit concerned about how it might turn out given past experiences out, so I felt recipe selection was of the utmost importance. After a bit of searching, I decided to use the French 75 recipe that I found on Bon Appetit’s site. It calls for:
2 ounces London dry gin – we used Tattersall.
¾ ounce fresh lemon juice
¾ ounce simple syrup
2 ounces Champagne – we used La Marca Prosecco.
Long spiral lemon twist (for serving)
Our French 75s made following Bon Appetit’s recipe by Chris Morocco turned out tres magnifique! Leisure Testing Result: Double-Thumbs-Up Yum! Difficulty Rating: Easy Peasy.
My hypothesis about what’s gone wrong with the drink when we’ve had it out: a bartender unfamiliar with the drink who just looked up the ingredients online, or in a bartending book didn’t shake the first 3 ingredients with ice. It needs to be cold! The lemon juice wasn’t fresh. Their chosen bubbly was too sweet.
The least likely possibility (but still a possibility) when the drink goes wrong is the bartender not using enough gin. I do not like for my drinks to be burned by any means, I’m all in for the taste. However, back when it was concocted during WWI, the drink was said to have such a kick that it felt like being shelled by a French 75mm field gun.
I’m done troubleshooting my past experiences with the drink.
This drink is definitely divine and worth a try. If you make it at home, please let us know in the comments below! Also, if there’s a drink you’d like to see us make, please comment below! We’ll soon be making a rum based drink thanks to a fan’s comment on a previous post.
