Langton’s Writer Ian Desmond takes a look at two big show wines from the Willy Wonka of McLaren Vale, owner and winemaker of d’Arenberg, Chester Osborn. Langton’s Classified ‘Outstanding’ The Dead Arm McLaren Vale Shiraz 2017 and the Ironstone Pressings McLaren Vale Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre 2016.
The fruit for The Dead Arm is sourced from old estate vines—some dating back to 1912—and undergoes traditional winemaking practices, such as foot treading, barrel fermentation and maturation in new and seasoned French and American oak for around 18 to 22 months.
The result is typically concentrated wine with blackberry, plum and spice aromas, fine, gravelly, firm tannins and underlying savoury nuances. The Dead Arm 2017 is a classic of the line and should stand up for collectors over the next 20 years or more.
