Chicago based Flight Attendant here! Taking you around the world through my kitchen and today we are stopping in Porto, Portugal! We are making a Francesinha, my favorite “meat” filled sandwich. This is a recipe that includes vegetarian alternatives as I do not eat meat. Let’s get cooking and make some yummy Portuguese food.

Seitan steak recipe:
vegan Linguica: 15 oz meat alternative, 1 tbsp paprika, 1/2 tsp garlic powder, salt to taste, 1 TBSP olive oil, dash 1/4 tsp cayenne, 1/2 tsp oregano
smoked ham alt: Tofurky brand smoky bacon

My favorite air fryer:

Sandwich:
2 slices smoked ham
4 Linguica sausage (Sub hotdogs)
1/4 inch steak
2 slices thick bread
soft white cheese 4-8 slices (I used muenster)

Sauce
1/2 yellow onions chopped
2 TBSP of butter
3-4 garlic cloves, minced
1/4 cup milk ( I used almond)
1 TBSP cornstarch
12 oz non bitter beet ( I used BudLight)
1/4 c port wine
1 cube beef stock
1 bay leaf
salt/ pepper to taste

Optional:
fried egg
french fries

Sauce:
Preheat oven to 350F
dissolve corn starch and 2 TBSP of milk in separate dish, set aside. Melt butter in saucepan, add onions and garlic. Cook for a few minutes until translucent. Add tomato paste and heat for a minute. Add in remainder of milk, port wine, beer, bay leaf and beef stock; bring to a boil. Turn down to medium/low heat and simmer for 20-30 minutes. Strain sauce to get rid of onion, garlic and bay leaf. Place back on stove on low heat and mix in the cornstarch paste. Make sure to give it a stir before adding it. Sauce will begin to thicken.

Sandwich:
Layers go with bread, cheese, sausage, ham, steak, sausage, cheese, bread, fried egg and cheese. You can layer it while the sauce simmers.

Place in oven for 5-10 minutes until cheese melts. Top with sauce and enjoy. Optional, can be served with french fries.
