Wineport Lakeshore Restaurant was opened in 1993 by husband & wife team, Ray Byrne and Jane English. Wineport Lodge was host for many series to The Restaurant Show both on RTE & TV3.
Wineport is itself a townland name of the area where the business is situated three miles north of Athlone on the shores of the inner lakes of Lough Ree on the Shannon.

The origin of the name – Wineport

The association between this peaceful spot on the inner lakes of Lough Ree in the centre of Ireland, and the great tradition of wine drinking goes all the way back to the year 542 A.D. From the earliest times there was alway a demand for wine in Ireland, and the trade was usually with France. From evidence contained in Irish mythology it is obvious that the nobility consumed their fair share of wine. Another strong demand for wine came from the early church as wine was essential for the celebration of mass.

The townland of Wineport is named after the sheltered place at which the wine that had travelled from Gaul (France) was carefully landed and brought ashore for consumption. Now, over fourteen hundred years later, wine continues to arrive at Wineport. Nowadays, demand is stronger than ever and wine is in plentiful supply and of the highest quality.

We stayed in Barossa Valley Room

The Barossa Valley is a renowned wine-producing region northeast of Adelaide in South Australia. The generally hot climate of the Barossa Valley usually means that the grapes become ripe very easily with high levels of sugars and low levels of acids. Recommended “Penfolds Private Release Chardonnay” and available on their Wine list.
