The color of the 2017 Tannat is deep purple, not quite inky, but dark enough to be mistaken for Petite Sirah. The hues have acquired a bit of carmine which is to be expected; Tannat is second only to the Napa Cabernet for the length of aging before release; eighteen months in barrel and a year in the bottle. The aroma of the wine is focused on concentrated dense ripe black fruits most notably; black currants. Along with the cassis, there is some subtle meaty and earthen notes that often reminds me of Bordeaux. Aging in small heavily toasted barrels provides a bouquet of smoky almost charred wood with overtones of patent malt and scents associated with porter and stout. Thick flavors of jammy briary blackberry are accompanied by an acidity that prevents the ripeness of this wine from becoming cloying. Fruit flavors transition to those of woodsy oak and chalk and drift into a full satisfying finish. We feel that we have ‘tamed’ the tannins and while they are substantial they are far from aggressive.
