In Episode 2, Barron Beltz discusses how the slight differences in the climate between the Wine Regions of Alsace, France and southwestern Baden, Germany can impart subtle flavor distinctions in wines made from the exact same grape.

Big Baden
Check out the video and you will see a map at 1min 26sec. This map shows how the Rhein River in this area runs vertically and represents the eastern border of France and the western border of Germany. The Alsace Wine Region of France is roughly 120km/75mi long, starting from near Mulhouse in the South to near Strasbourg in the North. A portion of the southwestern Baden Wine Region of Germany parallels the Alsace, but this represents only a tiny slice of the entire Baden wine growing region. The Baden stretches nearly 400km/249mi from the border of Switzerland in the South to towns like Karlstadt on the Main River on the northwestern edge of the region.

Only a “Hop, Skip and a Jump” Away
For the most part, the Alsace and its parallel area of Baden are only 30km/18mi apart with the Rhein River winding between. This short 30-minute drive, however, generally represents quite a stylistic difference in wines made with the same grape! There are many reasons as to why this is the case, which can include factors like differences in the soil, farming practices, elevation, harvesting timelines, and a plethora of winemaking choices and preferences; but here we’ll focus on the climate.
