“Party & Rum” represents the joyful quality of latin american parties, with people dancing salsa, “merengue” or any latin dance genre. The subject of joy and happiness is not very often portrayed in art (or in music) and it is a subject which fascinates me, because when you finally find a happy song or a joyful composition you are suddenly touched by a sensation that is not far from the joy that surely is to be found in heaven, when we get there. This movement was inspired by that sensation, and painted with two themes that in my mind represent the simple joy of the common man (or woman), people who are able to find joy even in a small party at home, with friends, rum, wine, food, and some music to dance to. Wine and rum are not goals in themselves in this scenario, but rather beverages to lift the heart and move your legs for some good dancing. After the dramatic introduction, the first theme appears, and it has a salsa music flavor. After a mysterious transition comes the second theme which is more akin to what we call “typical panamanian music”, in other words, music that has influence from folk panamanian music but it is not strictly folklore. The first theme comes back and closes the piece.
