The Coteaux du Quercy region is one of France’s smallest wine regions, with only 400 hectares and less than 20 growers. After grape pest Phylloxera ravaged Europe’s vineyards in the late 1800s, Quercy, once 50 000 hectares, was almost destroyed. Roger Gisbert, former owner of Chai St Etienne, and his brave mates started their appellation from scratch.

Located just 20 minutes from famed region Cahors, the estate has been run by generations of Gisbert vignerons since 1778, focused on making wine to be shared amongst good company (and preferably over long lunches). The vineyard is nestled between fields of sunflowers and fruit trees, with vines wrapping around the church of Saint Etienne – its bell tower keeping watch over the grapes.

Making the best wine possible from sustainable vinification methods is the raison d’etre for the Gisbert family – sticking to tried and tested processes from generations past, in order to create balanced and elegant Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Côt blends, as well as delicious Cabernet Franc and Rosé. Today, sons Benoit and Mathieu Gisbert farm the vineyard sustainably, and craft the wines their family has made famous.

A no-oak blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec. Farmed sustainably and made sensitively, this is a soulful red showing a mix of ripe fruit and liquorice spice. Cabernet Franc takes the lead, with the harmony provided by the local Malbec and a touch of Merlot. A lovely ruby colour in the glass, theres plenty of darker forest fruits and dried spices. The Merlot softens the blend on the palate, bringing generous fruit. A great glass of red.
