A two-week supermarket field study alternated French and German music beside French and German wines. French music was followed by French wine outselling German wine; German music produced the opposite pattern. Shoppers’ questionnaire answers suggested they had not noticed the influence. The primary study was North, Hargreaves & McKendrick (1999), DOI 10.1037/0021-9010.84.2.271. A later meta-analytic review supports broader effects of background music in retail settings, but not this exact result in every aisle. Because music changed by day rather than shopper, other daily differences remain a limitation.
