Is red wine really good for your heart?
The idea took hold in the 1980s with the “French Paradox” – the observation that a population eating rich, fatty food still had low rates of heart disease, which the press credited to red wine and its antioxidant resveratrol. But a single glass contains a minuscule amount of resveratrol, roughly a thousand times less than the doses that showed any benefit in animal studies. The original comparison also gave wine the credit for what was really an entire diet and lifestyle pattern, and large modern analyses have found no level of alcohol that protects the heart.
So drink red wine because you enjoy it, not as medicine.
