I just moved into a new home. We are currently drywalling some of the odd niches and cutouts of this early 2000s ranch, including a … bump in???… above the fireplace. Main floor is going to be mostly BM Ashwood and Hazy Skies. Wanted to do BM Vintage Vogue accent wall in the family room to define the media space, shown in AI photo 2. Also one in across the hall in what will be a library room. Samsung picture TV and frame on order. But I'm getting heebie jeebie vibes that accent walls are "out". For context, I'm 71, husband 75 and if we're blessed, we might age in place here 10 years. Will this bring beauty to the space or are we dating ourselves? Also included photo of a real estate staging photo that shows more of the room before we moved in.

The green accent wall does look dated to me. I’d paint the room all one colour personally! If you want to accent the fireplace maybe consider adding new stone/tile and carrying it all the way up to make it look more grand! Congrats on the new home!
Woah never seen a wall like that
Don’t worry if accent walls are in or out. If you like the room, it will be perfect. I like accent walls. 🙂 Your new house is beautiful and so are the colors you are picking, so enjoy it!
Accent walls are kinda out, I agree.
But, if you love it and you style it tastefully, who cares! We have accent walls of Victorian and French Inspired wallpaper in our kitchen and in my vanity area. I’m sure it’s not to everyone’s taste! But the rooms are decorated with intention and cohesion in mind, so it works instead of looking tacky. I really believe your living space should be what you want and what makes you feel cozy and full of joy, even if you are renting for a year. Follow your intuition.
