In this video, I’ll show you every step to create restaurant-quality French Onion Soup at home—from perfectly caramelizing onions to achieving that iconic golden, bubbly cheese topping.

🧅 Ingredients

4 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon sugar (optional, helps caramelization)
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
½ cup dry white wine (optional)
6 cups beef broth
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
2 sprigs fresh thyme (or 1 teaspoon dried thyme)
1 bay leaf
Salt and black pepper to taste
1 baguette, sliced
2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese (or Swiss cheese)

👨‍🍳 Instructions

Heat butter and olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
Add sliced onions and cook slowly for 35–45 minutes, stirring often until they become deep golden brown.
Stir in garlic and cook for 1 minute.
Add sugar (optional) and sprinkle flour over the onions. Stir for another minute.
Pour in white wine and simmer for 2–3 minutes until reduced.
Add beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, and bay leaf.
Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 25–30 minutes.
Remove the thyme sprigs and bay leaf. Season with salt and pepper.
Toast baguette slices until golden.
Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls, top with toasted bread and plenty of Gruyère cheese.
Broil for 2–4 minutes until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden.
Serve immediately and enjoy!

💡 Tips:

Take your time caramelizing the onions—the flavor depends on it.
Gruyère gives the most authentic taste, but Swiss or mozzarella can also be used.
For a vegetarian version, substitute beef broth with vegetable broth.
