Had this by the glass at a cheese bar in Richmond over the weekend. It is one of Pablo Fallabrino’s natural reds out of Canelones in Uruguay, native yeast and no added sulfur, and they poured it cold straight out of the fridge which I was not expecting for a red.
The nose is really light, mostly strawberry and cherry, kind of shy. Then the palate throws a bit of tannin at you with this tart cherry and a floral thing going on underneath, which is a weird combo for a wine served that chilled but I didn’t hate it. Finish is crisp and clean and pretty short. It is well balanced for an easy drinker, maybe just a touch grippy for the style.
Fun bottle and the elephant label is great, but I don’t think I’d go out of my way to buy it again. I’d call it 11/20 on my personal scale. Anyone else drinking Uruguayan natural wine lately, or is Fallabrino kind of a one off over here?
