Hi! My husband and I just thrifted this incredible floral arm chair! But now we’re trying to find a new rug to go with the space. We bought two rugs but I think they might both clash with the chair? We’re also trying to not spend too much money on a rug since this isn’t our forever home (like $150-300 budget, but could be convinced to go higher if it’s the perfect rug).

Note: I know we need a new/bigger couch for the space-working on trying to find one on fb marketplace!

Second: ignore the bright teal pool cushions in the back!

Third: disregard that the rug options aren’t pulled all the way under the couch enough!
Rug 1 is pics 2-4, Rug 2 is pics 5-7 (apologies that the overhead light is not on in pics 5-7)

Fourth: I know the art work is too narrow for the wall. Thinking of adding more (like 3?) tchotkes and wedding photos on the right and left of the botanical prints

Please feel free to suggest new rugs! I love the idea of mixing patterns (my inspiration is always Caroline Winkler’s living room) but don’t have the eye to figure out how to put different patterns together. We also love color!

TIA!!! 💛

This chair is a strong statement piece. You can’t have a patterned rug with it. That would cause too much conflict between the chair and rug. If you are committed to the chair, get a single colour rug in cream, mustard or the terracotta shade in the chair pattern. The issue then is also the couch, which is a cool tone grey, and the chair is full of warm tones, as is the red coffee table. The chair is also vintage styling, the couch is modern. Honestly, my brutal opinion is that this room is never going to come together well with the pieces you currently have. They are too disparate in style and tonal value.

Do you love it? Base colours around it… If you’re not in love with it you could cover it?

Take what I say with a grain of salt- I’m an artist, not a decorator.

But I think you need a clear color palette to work with because right now in these pictures, the rugs, furniture, and walls, don’t follow a cohesive color language.

One recommendation- you can use the painting above your fireplace as your color palette, because it already ties in the yellows from your new arm chair and the oranges from your coffee table. It can guide the color decisions you make for the rest of your room.

So following that palette, what is missing? Some rich dark blues, with maybe a hint of dark green too. I’d either get a rug or couch to pull in those dark blues.

I looked up Caroline Winkler’s work since you said she’s your inspiration- and that’s one of the reasons she pulls off her technique of mixing colors and styles- her rooms have a clear color language.

Essentially, the chair is really comfy and we like it. But is the addition of the chair creating more issues for us than solutions? Would there be an armchair pattern that could go with other patterns?

I absolutely LOVE the armchair! It’s beyond fantastic, and goes great with the coffee table and pouf I think. That said, I do agree that it’s a strong enough piece that a patterned rug is a bad idea. I think it would look FANTASTIC with an ochre or cream rug as previously suggested!

Then there’s the couch, which also doesn’t go – but a throw and a few pillows in more matching colors would go a long way towards helping that. It’s going to be eclectic, but i honestly love that in a room. The chair has a big personality and I think that’s fun!
