I repainted my house lately and put everything back a bit differently. now for some reason my living room area looks more granny than cottagecore. Is it just because i need to put my paintings and hanging plants back or is there more to it ?

All thats different, other than the paint colour, is the curtains, the carpet and the way I placed my shelf. I also used to have more plants over the piano and not a painting? I love my carpet i really hope thats not the culprit.

I think it’s the paint colour. It’s very bland and does nothing to tie the other elements together.

Your rug is fine – beautiful, honestly. I’d say it’s the wall paint. The wall paint is outdated which makes the room seem outdated rather than cottage

What is that in between the table and couch? It looks very granny esque to me but also cluttered. A new area rug couldn’t change the vibe to less granny ish too.

I would say paintings would definitely help, but to me it’s the wall color. Maybe something brighter/ pastel would work. Even wallpaper on one wall as an accent if you’re into it 🙂

Maybe replacing the footstool with a round one would be a good idea. It’s a lot of rectangular shapes, you have the rug, and the coffee table, plus the footstool.

Your wall paint is definitely not tying things together .

Cottagecore often has more whimsical elements. I’d change out the throw pillows for ones with a mushroom or forest print, something like that, in colors that tie into the rug. Also, a whimsical vase, figurine, or lamp on the table in the corner by the couch would be cute. On your coffee table, I’d add some sort of art book of fairies or mushroom/forest/etc. illustrations.

The tufted pink sofa says granny

That black lamp also is from the 1990s and make it look dated, my parents had the same one in the 90s

The walls. You picked the weirdest beige/yellowy brown/sand? for the walls and ended up with something an old lady would have in the 80’s and 90’s. Another style could work with the walls, but it doesn’t do anything good for your style unfortunately

Just throw up paintings and plants and what have you on the walls to cover them a bit, and you’ll be back with a cozy room again. Probably

Paint color and you need more things. Cottage core has more texture and whimsy and more items everywhere. Like it should feel like a fairy has been living there for 20 years and constantly collecting things and bringing them home

It’s so cute and not too far off cottagecore but I think it’s the color palette and lack of newer and whimsical elements. I would lean more into greens, get rid of the ottoman (there are too many things with that style of leg plus the pattern is v grandma), and put some art on the walls as well! Combining new and vintage is usually the key to making a space look cottagecore and not granny-esque. Also adding personal elements like art and other bits and bobs that feel like “you” will really make the space feel extra homey!

It’s the furniture as well— Queen Anne style furnishing are usually associated with the granny look and not cottage core.

Green pillows and a few framed art hung. Group all the plants together. Move the bench perpendicular to the table outside the carpet- forefront. That’s all I see😅🙏❤️
