It’s not ugly but the cool tone greys (couch and rug especially) clash with the warm tone wood panelling.
I’d get one larger rug instead of the two layered ones.

Not ugly. Cozy. I agree with the comment about the rugs. Looks strange. I wouldn’t buy a new one. I would just suggest getting rid of the small one, pulling the larger one away from the TV, and anchoring it with the sofa.

Grab a rug with that blue color from the heater? It’s a pretty blue. That’ll make it more cozy! It’s not ugly though at all, it’s cozy just drop a bit of color in a rug!!!

I could be totally off base here but maybe lose the rope lights at the the top and try some different accent lighting? Other than that I really like the space.

Go thrifting for a coffee table. Not glass. ;() Maybe paint the alcove area for beverages, making it a focal point. A larger table for the lamp. More blue accents.
Your style looks like handmedown/curb score/mish mash. It has some nice elements, like the fireplace, but most things dont look they were intentionally picked out for this space
