Recipe: Le Gratin Savoyard from Hostellerie De La Poste,
Avallon, France
Vincent and Mary Price were traveling through the Savoyard Alps— near the Italian and Swiss borders— where they were introduced to this scalloped potato recipe during lunch at an inn called Mégève. Gruyere is not a surprising choice of cheese for this recipe, since Gruyere is a Swiss Alpine cheese, and although this recipe is French, Price wrote “the dairy products and cheese are typically Alpine in that part of France”. However, 8 sliced medium potatoes are not enough for 2 cups of grated cheese; I would definitely add an additional two cups to complement the cream. Price also suggested to rub the baking dish with a clove of garlic before putting in the potatoes. The taste would surely give the Gruyere taste an extra kick. For this video’s recommended feature, Vincent Price stars with Charles Bronson in the adaptation of a Jules Verne classic.
