Hi all,
A friend of mine held a comparative tasting between French and Japanese wines at Tokyo French Institute.
I had the chance to attend and it was so interesting to compare the 2 different worlds side by side.
His selection for the tasting was focused on sparkling wines:
– Sans Soufre Blanc, Takeda Winery, Yamagata 🇯🇵
A natural sparkling wine made of table grape which felt alive, unfiltered and raw
– Champagne Arnaud de Cheurlin Brut 🇫🇷
A precise French champagne, pretty good but nothing unexpected.
The Champagne had a chalky tension and strong lasting whereas the Yamagata was more focused on the fruit and very pure acidity.
– Legami Brut from Camel Farm Winery 🇯🇵
It is a winery from Hokkaido, comparing it to Alsace or champagne was very interesting as all those regions have strong cool climate expression. I loved the citrus/apple/salin notes on this wine.
– Cuvee Kiraku, Terre D’Etoiles, Crémant d’Alsace 🇫🇷
This wine ended up being almost everyone favorite.
Really balanced, fresh, easy to drink, still complex.
I think it’s the hint of honey & yeast in the aroma that made it stand out more.
