I’m posting this for the sake of getting better at notes and also maybe some feedback for other that have had experience with this particular wine to see if I’m on track here or maybe I just really don’t like this style? I know this isn’t the most exciting offering from Penfolds but this was meant to be a fun/cheap weekday wine.
Drank over two days: On the nose notes of cherries, vanilla, oak, and pepper. Color was deep red. On the pallete initally lots of oaky and jammy red fruit, cherry, spicy on the mid pallete. medium tannins, medium acid. The flavors on the pallete are QUICKLY whisked away by the finish which was rough and very bitter and quite astringent. This first glass of this was quite unpleasant on the finish. I decanted half the bottle for about 2 hours before having a 2nd glass which helped balance the wine a bit but still quite bitter. I left the rest of the bottle out on the counter overnight in hopes that it would be better on day 2. 2nd day from the bottle the aromas didn’t change much but on the pallete it was much more balanced and approachable and not as bitter on the finish. Maybe this wine was just too far out of its drinking window? Overall I had a lot of fun trying to figure out this wine. The experience of attempting to bring this wine into a more approachable form felt like a good learning. I think I’ll remember this wine for a long time and maybe even added a point or two just for that fact that it was fun to experiment over the course of two days. Overall 84 points.
