Just looking for a bit of input here. I'm about to buy my first bottle of this one – don't know what took me so long – and here (Japan) I can get either the '20 or '21. Any strong opinions on which is the better version? I know that '21 is generally considered the better vintage for Rioja but this bottling seems pretty consistent. If anything there's maybe a feeling that the 2020 is a little more robust and "typical", and the 2021 a little more elegant and refined. Thanks in advance for sharing your insight.

Both are solid choices but I’d lean towards the 2020 if you want more traditional Rioja experience for your first bottle. The extra robustness you mentioned is perfect for getting familiar with their house style – it’s like getting the “full volume” version before trying variations 😂

I had the 2020 last year and it was everything you expect from good Rioja reserva, really showcased those classic flavors without being too subtle. The 2021 might be more refined but sometimes refined can mean you miss some of the character that makes this producer special in first place. Plus if you end up loving it, you can always grab the 2021 next time to compare the elegance factor. Either way you’re getting great wine, this producer is pretty consistent like you said 🔥
