Upgraded the “daily drinker” to Ponzi 2012 Pinot Noir Abetina 2 Vineyard. It’s my dog’s third birthday but her younger feline sibling “photobombed” this review.
Stats: 2012 vintage, 100% pinot noir (mix of clones), Willamette Valley Oregon USA.
Appearance: beautiful color for a 2012 vintage. Deep garnet with little bricking. Built to last and it’s gone the distance!
Nose: evolved to cherry liqueur and some spice (cedar?).
Palate: fully integrated and a silky smooth texture. Cherry liqueur and dark fruit with a healthy dose of tertiary spice for a long and delightful finish.
Assessment: the reviewers at Vinous (Josh Raynolds, whom we lost too early and whose taste and methodology I hold in high regard) and Wine Enthusiast were spot-on that this wine would age gracefully. The higher elevation site makes a difference: I think it can go into 2028.
My score: 93
