In an effort to become more energy efficient, I've started drawing the curtains during the day. These ones specifically are on a west facing window and so spend most of the afternoon in direct sunlight. It looks like quite a bit of light is still getting through. Is this the best I can expect from blackout curtains, or do I just have poor ones?
These curtains do have a white backing, which I know should help reflect IR light back outside.

You have bad ones
Any blinds on the windows? Or just the curtains? You can get screwless ones that just wedge into the window. Also helps with temps/draft if you are looking for efficency.
There is nothing blackout about those curtains. Sounds like they were either mislabeled or they’re not a good product.

At best those are *maybe* room darkening, but honestly probably not even that. Not blackout.
We have blinds+blackout curtains in the nursery, and I need the night light to see in there during nap time. At 1:30 in the afternoon. We once had several fire trucks, ambulances, and police cars outside our house (for our neighbors, not us. Everyone was fine) right outside her window and I didn’t know until I walked out of the house to take the trash out. That’s what you want from “blackout” products.
They are doing a good job of keeping the black out by illuminating your room.
