This is a Mascarello Giuseppe e Figlio “Toetto” Langhe Freisa 2019 — a really interesting and somewhat rare choice.
The Producer
Mascarello Giuseppe e Figlio is one of Piedmont’s most revered traditional producers, based in Castiglione Falletto since 1881. They’re best known for their legendary Barolo (particularly Monprivato), so seeing their Freisa is a treat — it shows the family’s commitment to native varieties.
The Grape — Freisa
Freisa is an ancient Piedmontese variety that’s a genetic relative of Nebbiolo. It’s quite rare and largely overlooked, which makes it a sommelier’s darling. Expect:
• Bright, high acidity
• Red fruits — raspberry, cherry, wild strawberry
• Floral notes, often violet and rose
• A distinctive savory/earthy edge, sometimes a hint of pine or herbs
• Firm but not aggressive tannins
The Style
At 14% ABV, this is a serious, dry rendition. Freisa can be made sparkling or slightly sweet traditionally, but Mascarello makes a structured, dry table wine version that rewards food pairing.
At the Table
Phenomenal with charcuterie, mushroom dishes, roasted pork, or anything truffled. Great fit for a restaurant setting if you want an Italian by-the-glass that sparks conversation.

Fresia can be a nice wine with a bit of a chill. It has nice floral notes and generally is an easy drinker.
