During the Nazi Occupation of France, it is often believed that the country’s great wine regions were simply looted by Germany. But the reality was far more complex.
Recent historical research reveals a troubling story of economic collaboration, where some wine merchants and producers actively worked with the occupiers. Behind the façade of tradition and terroir, fortunes were made, deals were struck, and French wine even found its way into unexpected uses — including fueling Germany’s V2 rockets.
Yet this is not a one-sided story. Alongside opportunism and profit, there were also acts of resistance, where individuals chose solidarity over gain.
