Today, I’m staying at the Winter Palace, a historic 5-star luxury hotel in Luxor, Egypt. This hotel is famous as the place where British archaeologist Howard Carter announced the discovery of Tutankhamun.

1886: Established. British explorers established the property as a Victorian palace.

1905–1907: Renovations and official opening. Cairo-based hoteliers Charles Boehler and George Nungovich, in collaboration with travel agency Thomas Cook, converted the building into a boutique hotel. It officially opened on January 19, 1907, as the Winter Palace Hotel.

1914–1918: During World War I, the hotel served as a hospice for British soldiers.

1922: Discovery of King Tutankhamun. The hotel is most famous for its link to Howard Carter. After discovering King Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings, Howard Carter and his patron, George Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon, announced their discovery on the hotel’s notice board and main terrace.

1975: The three-star New Winter Palace was built but demolished in 2008.

1996: The four-star The Pavilion Winter Palace was added to the backyard.

2017: AccorHotels, in collaboration with the EGOTH, carried out an extensive renovation and debuted as the Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor.

2026-27: A new era. Mandarin Oriental will take over management in May 2026, and the hotel will close for extensive renovations until July 2027.
