The jambon beurre is one of the most traditional sandwiches in Paris — a simple combination of baguette, butter, and Jambon de Paris.
Its origins are closely tied to Les Halles, once the central food market of the city, where workers needed something fast, filling, and built from ingredients available on the spot. More than a century later, it remains a daily staple across Paris — from quick takeaway counters to long-established cafés.
In this video, I visit three different places that still serve the classic version today — each with its own setting, clientele, and way of preparing it.

Oh. A ham sandwich. Original.
I wonder if that sandwich is any good
I've never had the real thing, but this is one of my favorite sandwiches. The crusty bread, the overly abundant amount of butter and the cold, salty ham. Mmmmmmmmmm.
"la baguette"
Only a peasant wouldn't use Dijon on it.
It's an half baguette (demi-baguette) for a Jambon-beurre sandwich. Ideally created as such, this is the base.
You might also add cheese into a jambon-beurre, the main one being Emmental…
Beurre (butter), jambon (ham) and emmental (what a delightful cheese!).
Very simple ingredients, each one needing to be fresh or freshly made. An incredible pleasure for a french man like me !
Yes, bread, butter and ham is a classic French sandwich. However, I will never eat at any place where they prepare my food with black trash gloves. This stupid trend needs to stop. You use white or blue / purple gloves to show contamination. Also if the glove should tear or rip, you see it in the food. I will continue to boycott any place that uses them and I suggest you all do the same.
As a European I am a HUGE fan of this Sandwich, I could never understand when I came to the US why here they bastardize sandwiches with all the crap they put on top which will drown the Centerpiece, same with the Hot Dog (which are most never all-beef in Europe ) with all the relish, mustard, ketchup, cheese, and and and and — and I am culinary trained person
Une bonne Casse-Croute
We say in Switzerland : What is a Sandwich without meat? It's nothing but bread. What is a Sandwich without bread – it's nothing but meat
The key point is that the ham is not smoked but wet-cured, or as he said, brined. It’s not a Smithfield ham. It’s less salty, milder and more natural tasting.
Similar to traditional Mexican ham used to make the “torta de jamon.”
Finding a really good ham among US supermarket cold cuts would be the big problem. Maybe something like the deli counter of a Publix that sells Iberico Ham might be the answer. The beauty is with the right ingredients anyone can make this masterpiece.
Its the perfect sandwich.
A real French baguette with anything will be delicious. Nothing particularly amazing about the 3 ingredients except France.
Just give me the loaf of bread and butter. Keep ham.
Deliciosos se ven……ya tendré oportunidad de probarlos, gracias.
I like the video very much but I gotta admit the piano music was a little reminiscent of the scene in the Silence of the Lambs where Hannibal Lector was beating the two guys with the PR24. Also, putting ham on buttered bread is a Midwest tradition. Maybe it came from France.
One of life's greatest pleasures. Amazing that something so simple can be so satisfying.
Try Ham sandwich from Petit poucet…..hot maple hame on a toasted hamburger bun
LA baguette. Ca devrait etre feminin..
Best sandwich ever, and I have only had one I bought at Orly Airport. How can I make a similar tasting one in the US? Seriously, I have tried and it is not the same:(
Perfect content… Thanks!! 😋
Simple and delicious
I look forward to these sandwiches whenever I’m in Paris.
Compare this sandwich with a American sandwich…. The Americans put everything you can buy, from ham, salami, pepperoni, fake American cheese, lettuce, tomatoes etc etc…on a sloppy bread and wondering which kind of taste does the sandwich have…. 😂
