→ What “moderate drinking” really means

For years, you’ve heard red wine is good for your heart. Antioxidants. Resveratrol. The French Paradox. All reasons to feel good about that nightly glass of wine.
It’s marketing. Not medicine.
Red wine contains alcohol – ethanol. The same chemical compound in vodka, beer, whiskey, and every other alcoholic drink. Your body processes it exactly the same way regardless of the source.
The resveratrol argument? You’d need to drink hundreds of glasses to get the amount used in studies. Long before you got any benefit, the alcohol would destroy your liver.
Your liver metabolizes alcohol into acetaldehyde – a toxic compound that damages cells, increases cancer risk, and contributes to liver disease. Whether that alcohol came from an expensive Bordeaux or cheap vodka makes zero difference to your liver.
The French Paradox – lower heart disease rates in France despite high-fat diets – isn’t about wine. It’s about overall lifestyle, portion sizes, walking culture, and less processed food. The wine is incidental, not causative.
“Moderate drinking” is constantly redefined downward as research improves. Current evidence shows no safe amount of alcohol. Even small amounts increase cancer risk, liver damage, and cardiovascular problems.
If you enjoy wine, be honest about why you drink it. Taste. Relaxation. Social enjoyment. Those are real reasons. But don’t pretend it’s health food. It’s not.
Red wine has the same risks as any other alcohol. Period.
