Professor James Clark is scaling the French Alps on a mission to “make our planet great again”. That’s the name of his program, a global climate research initiative launched by France in response to America’s withdrawal from the Paris agreement.

The project has drawn top scientists from around the world to French and German labs, where they will conduct climate-related research alongside Euripean colleagues. Professor Clark is among the 43 scientists selected, more than half of which were based in the US.

Despite its name, the program is about much more than politics. For participants like Mr. Clark, it’s a chance to think long term about the future with a level of support that they have not felt in the US. Though relatively small in scale, the program is meant to have a snowballing effect, galvanizing scientists and leaders around the world to tackle one of the biggest challenges of our time.

Follow us into the Alps to discover an alternative vision for the future.
