The Story Behind the Cake
According to the popular narrative, a French woman named Joan is waiting for her soldier husband to return from World War II.

Day 1: She bakes a strawberry cake, but he doesn’t return.

Day 2: She bakes a pistachio cake, but he still doesn’t show up.

Day 3: She bakes an orange cake, but he remains absent.

Day 4: The soldier returns with chocolates. Overjoyed, Joan layers the three cakes with cream and pours the melted chocolate over the top to celebrate their reunion.

This cake has become a popular, romantic baking challenge, and we recreated our own versions of the story and recipe.
