Baxters french onion soup is the one to get.
Thick French onion soup doesn't sound good, I think adding flour was a mistake. Adding garlic probably didn't improve things either as you were serving with the garlic bread, and you would mask the taste of the garlic bread if its stronger, different flavours would make it more interesting to eat.

Ive never added white wine to my french onion soup, traditionally its either french brandy or Armagnac. Im classicly trained chef
