This beautiful French Onion Tart from Alsace is one of those simple, honest recipes that quietly steals the show.
Sweet onions are gently cooked until soft and golden, then nestled into a delicate pastry and baked until the top turns beautifully caramelised. It’s rustic, elegant, and deeply comforting — and truly at its best served hot, straight from the oven.
Alsatian cooking has that lovely meeting of French and German influence, and this tart captures that spirit perfectly. It makes a gorgeous lunch with a simple green salad, or a lovely light supper.
In the video, I share a simple pastry technique that makes all the difference: using the heel of your hand to push the butter down and slightly forward into the flour. That gentle smearing motion helps flatten and distribute the butter evenly without overworking the dough — giving you a tender, crisp base that holds its shape beautifully.
If you love classic European recipes that have stood the test of time, I think you’ll really enjoy this one.
Warmly,
Lee 🤍

Hey everyone, when I published my flammkuchen recipe, some viewers kindly told me that it actually originates from Alsace — and that’s what led me to try this famous Alsatian tart as well. After making it several times now, I can confidently say it’s a winner. The pastry technique you see here can be used for all sorts of tarts — I’ve been using it regularly, and it works every time. It’s actually very easy.

I hope you enjoy it too if you decide to make it.

I tried to make some tortillas from scratch from a recipe that had good reviews but it looked terrible and ended up throwing it away. Can u make some home made tortillas gluten free and normal?
This looks fab will make over weekend . Thanks 🙏
Mmmm this looks good. I don't know how I'd go with it though, being predominantly onion flavoured. Hmmm maybe some bacon, feta cheese or spinach to mellow the dominance of the onion 🤔
GF flour can be stubborn and I can't make up my mind whether it's hydrophobic or hydrophilic?
Now that you've made a French Onion Tart, how about a Portuguese Custard Tart.
From the savoury to the sweet and in between a spicy treat.
Thanks for the recipe.
Cheers Lee 👍🤤😀
❤ 👍🏻
Yum! I think this would be delicious every season of the year! Thanks for a fine recipe.
Lovely recipe, Thanks. I always wonder where in your kitchen are the stove and oven located? I never see them when you are working on the bench.

Hi Lee … very interested to see the way you made that pastry. I have never added the egg when rubbing in the butter before. I can see that it turned out very well. Looking forward to giving it a try. Good to see that a variety of sizes of tins can be used … happy that the gf version was a success for you. Blessings for your week …🙏

Roll the gluten free pastry between wax paper (from cereal packets) or cling film, so much easier to roll, thank you for bringing us these fabulous recipes ❤️❤️
Thanks for the inspiration, I grew thyme in pots this summer and found there’s almost nothing it doesn’t compliment (maybe chocolate? 😛) so will use in this recipe too. x
