Beer O’clock. This newsreel clip, IWM IWM 427, (Filmed Fall of 1917) shows 12th Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment, rushing to get beer, possibly in celebration of a winter holiday. The British didn’t have a beer ration but they did have a daily rum ration which was 2.5 fluid ounces (about 70ml). The army didn’t provide beer logistics but civilian establishments (pubs in the UK and estaminets in France) were more than happy to sell it to parched soldiers. By 1917, 2.75 million French soldiers were receiving a ration of 750 mL of wine a day.
