“So we will look, we will look exactly at the consequences, what can be done, and we will adapt. Fundamentally what do we want: to continue exporting, our agricultural products, our luxury goods, our fashion, our cosmetics, our aeronautics, basically everything we are good at exporting, and having other, new products to export, because we continue to re-industrialize the country and do it with the fairest rules possible. And so the fairest rules possible involve reciprocity and not being subjected to unilateral decisions. So if this helps to pacify things, that’s good, and I think we should rather be in a mindset of international appeasement and continuity in the modernization of our economy in all these sectors.”

“Listen, I am calling everyone to remain calm. And the government is obviously very vigilant, the Prime Minister as well as the Minister of the Interior will be vigilant to ensure that things go as smoothly as possible. I think this is a moment of reflection and respect for our young compatriot who was killed, for his family, his loved ones. And that should be the priority. Then, it is a moment of firmness and responsibility.”

13. SOUNDBITE (French) Emmanuel Macron, French President:
“I will hold a meeting at the beginning of the week with the Prime Minister and the relevant ministers to thoroughly assess all the violent action groups that are active and have links with political parties, whatever they may be. Everyone must be responsible. In the Republic, no violence is legitimate. In the Republic, only republican forces can act because they protect and uphold a republican order. There is no place for militias, wherever they come from. We must be completely uncompromising on this.”

STORYLINE:
About 3,000 people joined a march organized by far-right groups on Saturday after a nationalist activist died from a beating in the French city of Lyon, in an incident that highlighted a climate of deep political tensions ahead of next year’s presidential vote.

French President Emmanuel Macron called for calm ahead of the tribute to Quentin Deranque, 23, who died of brain injuries in a hospital last week.

The demonstrations took place under heavy police scrutiny, with no major incidents reported.

He hinted that some groups could be dismantled.
