Did you know Petite Sirah is related to Syrah… but its not the same grape? It’s actually Durif, a cross between Syrah and Peloursin created in 19th-century France by botanist François Durif. Smaller berries, thicker skins, darker color, bigger tannins. It’s bold and inky (but still so often gets confused with its parent!)
But here’s the twist: while it was born in France, it found its true home in sunny California. Brought over in the late 1800s, Petite Sirah thrives in the heat, producing wines packed with black fruit, pepper, and structure. It’s one of the best examples of a French grape that became distinctly American.
