After eight months sober, I’m celebrating my 33rd birthday by opening a special bottle: a $100 Volnay Pinot Noir from Côte de Beaune, France. This is my grand return to wine, and I couldn’t have picked a better bottle to break sobriety with.
Volnay is known for producing some of the most elegant and aromatic Pinot Noirs in Burgundy, and this bottle didn’t disappoint. High floral notes of violet and rose, tart red fruits like cherry and unripe strawberry, earthy vegetal tones, and a bold tannin structure that literally made me forget how to swallow (seriously).
The palate is fascinating—mouth-drying tannins meet juicy fruit flavors in this strange but beautiful dichotomy. It’s full-bodied with weight from both tannins and alcohol, yet somehow still light and refreshing. Not as acidic as I expected for a Pinot Noir, but definitely complex and worth every penny.
First sip rating: 7.5/10. I think this wine will only get better as it opens up and those tannins soften.
If you’ve been sober and are thinking about your “breaking sobriety” wine, make it count. Make it special. For me, this Volnay was the perfect choice.
Here’s to drinking again! 🍷
