In the mid-19th century, a microscopic, aphid-like insect from North America called Phylloxera (Phylloxera vastatrix) almost completely destroyed the French wine industry. Between 1860 and 1890, this tiny bug decimated roughly two-thirds to 90% of all French vineyards, marking one of the worst agricultural disasters in European history.
