This French Dip sandwich was made fully from scratch, from the slow-cooked beef and au jus to the bread and all the little details in between.

Because there are quite a few steps, I shared the full written recipe (with tips, techniques, and timing) over on my Substack 👇

And yes, when I say fully from scratch, I mean almost fully.
I didn’t un-alive the cow or grow the ingredients myself… but you get the idea 😉

See you there and welcome to the club!

  2. Change your mind about American food? Anybody that thinks it's just hamburgers and hot dogs has put exactly zero effort into actually looking up what's available here. It's a big country lol

  3. When I visited my relatives in Ontario, CA, I drove all the way to Downtown LA just to try Philippe the Original. It was worth the drive. Turns out a lot of Dodgers fans come here for a sandwich to go, to eat while watching the Dodgers play.

  4. "Not the traditional one." Looks delicious but if you are going to modify the classic In every way I feel compelled to state the classic a simply a sandwich roll, sliced roast beef and a cup of plain beef au jus (nothing floating in in it) period. end. done. But again this looks delicious I am sure it is better than the classic.

  5. I was a Cole’s loyalist until they tragically closed last year. They also claim to have invented the French Dip!

  6. The origin story that I know as a native-born Californian is that the fireman (or policeman in some versions) was in a rush as he received a call while waiting for his lunch order, but the cook accidentally dropped the sandwich in the au jus and offered to remake it, but the customer had to go immediately, so he took it "as-is" and wound up loving it, so he went back to ask for it again and thus The French Dip Sandwich with a Cup of Au Jus was born!

  7. A similar sandwich, and Chicago staple, is the Italian Beef. It's thinly (like more thinly than cold cuts) sliced roast beef on French bread which can be then dipped in what is effectively au jus but is referred to as gravy here. Like the whole sandwich gets dunked, and topped with either hot giardiniera which is a mix of spicy peppers and veggies, or sweet giardiniera, which is, obviously, not spicy. You may also add cheese, mozzarella or provolone are both good, I've never had it with cheddar, but that's also a thing apparently. Serve with french fries.

The actual origin of the sandwich is unknown, but it's thought that either Italian American immigrants used the cooking and preparation method to stretch the cheap cuts of beef they had to purchase because of discrimination, and that it was served on bread to hide the cheap meat and stretch the meal further, or that is was invented to serve at weddings by either Pasquale Scala, or as Al's Beef claims, by Tony Ferreri.

It's an incredibly regional thing, and picked up popularity after The Bear was released. I personally like mine with hot giardiniera, mozzarella, and completely submerged in gravy

  8. The ONE thing I miss since discovering i have celiac disease is French dip. I've figured out how to make gluten free cookies, cakes, etc, but gluten free bread is a sad thing. Plus I can't find the au ju without someone deciding flour should be added for some ungodly reason. I'm not a great cook. Unless it's desserts or paprikash, I can't cook lol

  9. If you haven’t yet, you should do an Italian roast beef sandwich with hot giardiniera, I’m fairly certain it’s entirely a Chicago invention from the Italian American community

  10. Who’s talking trash about American food? We invented food…fast food….dough nuts, bbq chicken, pork, brisket, hamburgers, pizza of all types

  11. The french dip is a sandwich that severely matters where you get it. A crappy French dip is awful, but a good French dip is handily one of the best sandwiches I've ever made.

  12. I actually love these videos so much. In a time where being American often makes me sick to my stomach, these remind me that there are some good things that originated here. Then it’s makes me sad again, because so many of those amazing things were created by immigrants and we’ll take the credit, but we almost never acknowledge that the immigration of x benefited us

  13. I mean If I had to trash on United States food (not American because I don't like to trash on an entire continent) it would be only, because it's not even on my top ten favourite cuisines.

There are way more interesting cuisines worldwide and heck in their same continent there are tons of better cuisines.

  14. 14:42 This could become a real problem is consoles die out. They are the only thing that's kept game developers on their toes.
The current gen was supposed to require the developers to leverage DX12U but that's barely happened.
