Meet Rachel, who engaged the HCB Renovations Group to renovate her French chateau.
Lizzie is in Libourne, near Saint-Émilion in the Gironde, southwestern France to meet Rachel, who moved to France from Australia to renovate a château and start a new life with her daughter.
In this episode of Real French Connections, Lizzie visits Rachel at her château near Libourne to hear how she moved from Sydney to France with a clear goal: to start a new life and take on a once-in-a-lifetime château renovation project using French Connections . Rachel shares what it felt like arriving for the first time, driving through the gates, and why months of research gave her the confidence to make an offer within an hour after seeing the property online.
As Rachel shows Lizzie around the château, she explains her renovation approach room by room, from preserving original floors, fireplaces, stonework, and architectural features to redesigning kitchens, bathrooms, towers, and living spaces while keeping the integrity and history of the building intact.
Rachel also talks in detail about moving to France from Australia and the practical support she needed to make it happen. She explains how Richard and the team at French Connections HCB helped her navigate the visa process, manage the extensive paperwork involved in relocating, and understand the legal complexities of buying property in France. This included support around contracts, the final signing process, and avoiding potential pitfalls she wouldn’t have known about as a foreign buyer. Rachel also shares how Richard arranged the purchase of her car on her behalf, so it was delivered when she arrived, helping her settle into life in France immediately.
Alongside the renovation, Rachel reflects on finding community in rural France, raising her daughter bilingually, and building genuine relationships in her village. If you’re thinking about moving to France from Australia and want an honest insight into buying property, managing paperwork, and building a new life, this episode offers a clear and realistic look at what’s involved and how the right help from French Connections HCB really makes a difference.

She must be very rich
🥰🇨🇦
The woman was orange???? Did anyone else see it???
I'll be so scared to live in a huge place like this , I'm scared of ghost or anything spirit lurking lol. It looks beautiful though. Did she move alone with her dogs? I soo want to do this but not ready yet with the budget.
For your missing tiles, ask Stephany Jarvis at Chateau de Lalande ; @chateaudelalande. She had surced a very good hydraulic tiles maker to match the existing ones in her chappel.
Beautiful!!!👏👏👏
I am excited to follow your channel. I have loved watching Abby on Chateau Chronicles. I would love to come from US to volunteer.
Contact Terry, Ash & Tracy of Escape to the dream. Chateau lalacelle. They have their original oak floors restored by a wonderful Englushman who lives and works all over France. Aftwr 5 yrs of restoration almost finished. Check out Patrick & Stuart of Chateau de Colombe, Channel Journey to the Chateau. They all do it themselves. Wonderful people. Succes with your restoration
Châteaux :
not Shadows, nor Shutter !
Please 🎉
Ask Stephanie from chateau diaries for the tiles, she can help you!😊
This is going to cost a fortune 🔮😮
Will she be using YouTube to film her renovation journey? I would love to follow her journey. it is a beautiful property.
Love your history well done .👍
Beautiful place ❤
How many "Uhms" per minute?
Just lovely! I absolutely love you are compiling and keeping the history! Fascinating! You didn't show the stables. How many horses do you have / keep?
Having refurbished a number of old buildings, what I am not hearing is that she lived in the place a couple years and got to know the strong and weak points before tearing into the chateau. My experience is that mistakes will be made without experiencing the building through an annual cycle as respects light, heat and moisture. Remember she has moved from Australia which is a totally different climate.
What part of France is this in?
What a great story and a house full of soul – good for her! Am even more important subject to my family and I at least, is the sense of a kind and loving community some of us are SO lucky to be surrounded by in France! ❤❤
Lovely show the Château is gorgeous.. but.. I could barely get through the show because the non-word Umm was spoken almost every three words.
Those window shutters are criminal
Gorgeous chateau. The fountain seems a bit out of place ?
Contact Stephanie Jarvis from Chateau diaries… she found a tile manufacturer for her chapel that can duplicate your floor tiles perfectly. ❤️🙏
Would be more interesting to know how much did it cost to buy how are you financing the renovation ?
Stephanie z kanału Chateau Diaries znalazła manufakturę, gdzie robią płytki na stary sposób 🙂
You should contact Stephanie Jarvis of ‘Chateau Diaries’ they have found a tile maker who still make tiles in the original way, she is having some made for her chapel at LaLand. I hope this helps x
Oh it's just beautiful! Rachel will you start a you tube channel to document the restoration of the chateau, would love to follow along.
I think the cathedral ceilings would look absolutely stunning but heat rises and would you be giving up heat to have the beauty?
I have to second contacting Stephanie from Château diaries, she finally found a place to hand make and color match the tiles in there chapel, but it is time consuming.
