Today we’re talking about January—the reality of it, not the fantasy. We’re going to cover what to do when your resolutions have already fallen apart, the French tradition of Galette des Rois, and what fruits and nuts are actually available this time of year from storage, along with some traditional French recipes you can make with them.
So settle in, grab your tea or coffee, and let’s talk about making old things new again this January.

  1. I’m living my “French life” through you Carolyn! I love your ingenuity and gusto to create your home in France. I’m anxious to learn some of your knowledge.

  2. It matters you go in the direction you want to. I love nature and i think the best life is with Nature and the seasons. And dogs. Hope you can keep it warm in your home. .

  3. We do celebrate the 6th of january in the Netherlands. With the cake and the charm. Children dressed up as kings. Besides the birthday of my eldest granddaughter was yesterday 24 th and mine is the 27 th. We do celebrate our birthdays together with our family. My children and grandchildren all went to Rudolf Steiner ( Waldorf) schools and these schools are known for celebrating the seasons and many many feasts. The buildings are organic.

  4. We have medlar shrubs in the neghborhood. But there are many hard seeds in it. The timing to eat them is rather difficult .So either they often are not rotten enough or too rotten.

  5. Darn, I missed the live but enjoyed the video. Especially learning about recipes from a 1690 cookbook.

  6. Bonsoir from Florida dear Carolyn..Take it easy..Spring will be here in a few months, and flowers will be popping up..🌸🐞🌸

  7. Hey there Carolyn! Hope all is well and you're able to keep warm and cozy! Question, are you having any issues with frozen pipes with new bathroom upstairs? I am understanding that your heat for the house is either wood oven as you need fireplace chimney certified every year. Is this correct? If you don't mind me asking, how much is that? Maybe we all could help out somehow.
I hope you received the Amazon delivery earlier this month. A few more smaller things should be coming to you by end of week. I find most things on your wish list to be unavailable or out of stock, including the "most wanted". Hopefully you can take a look.
    Take care🎉

  8. Good to see you! I had a light stroke last year and they gave me a clot buster drug. I went through rehab exercises. I am well on the way to recovery. I am DIYing a 1946 house at the time. My motto is “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” I work at my pace every day and am getting stronger. I worked on a small greenhouse on my porch last week. It took me 4 tries to get some boards up but I stayed with it until I succeeded. I tell you this because I am sure you will succeed at whatever you wish to do. I am praying for your health and healing. I am losing weight on a Keto diet and eating sardines 3 days a week. I also eat very clean. I am starting a “no dig” garden one bed at a time. You are fortunate to have access to clean food there. BTW I am almost 73.

  9. I saw a guy use fishing line for a deer fence. I wonder if this would work for chickens? It is on YouTube

  10. One more thing..I have adopted a feral cat outside. She is slowly becoming my pet. She is a great mouser. I have to be careful of her getting under my feet. I save my sardine juice for her and feed her cat food once a day. Of course I have fixed a place for her to stay outside. You can make a feral cat house out of most anything. I sit outside and pet her. She is great company. The city caught her and spayed her before I started feeding her. I use DE diatomaceous ears on her for fleas twice a year. I just sprinkle a line of the powder along her spine. Works great.

  11. You do realize, don’t you, that you live in a Moslem country? Any a.rabs in your town?

  12. What kind of water do you have? I remember visiting Arkansas a the sulfur water stunk with sulfur. I know you share with neighbor, well water??

  13. I just love listening to you! One day, I will get to hug your neck for encouraging and inspiring me to live my dreams and to actually dream BIG!!! I am visiting Southern France for the first time in October. I just could not get France out of my brain bc I kept listening to you and your stories, inspired me so much I booked a trip-lol!! Keep posting bc I get giddy when I see you drop new content!!!! Big hugs and love to you dear Carolyn❤❤❤

  14. Hello! I hope you are keeping warm. The two shawls seem a good idea! I am in Texas (praying the the pipes in my Haute Vienne Home are not frozen). The wind chill is 9 F !! here, For people who work on Centigrade that is very cold..freezing is 32 F. The power is still on (fingers crossed ) oil lamps and flash lights plus a Camping Gaz stove, which I can use by the open kitchen window in an emergency . food in , loaves baked, laundry done and dried so hopefully I can survive until next week when it should be warmer. Take care in the cold and be careful if you leave the house. Many blessings from another (much older) lady in Texas.

  15. Can you attach an Apple tag or tile, a tracking device, on the drone in case it doesn’t come back?
Thank you for your honesty and videos.

  16. I love the seasonality of your vision board! I taught English in rural towns in Japan and much of the food served for school lunch was local. I could tell what time of the year it was just by looking at my lunch tray. Those were wonderful days and I long to get back to that lifestyle of eating local seasonal foods and savoring each season for what it has to offer.

  17. Sounds like your kids seriously underestimated you! 😊 I hope they've come to appreciate your unique spirit and strength. (And I hope they've apologised…)

  18. Good morning from Pinckney, Michigan and it’s cold here too🙏🏻🧑🏻‍🦳❄️☃️🌫️

  19. Got to listen to half of this and can't wait to finish! I'm excited about the exposed stone you will have in the house soon – I just love that look. Carolyn, I am 61 and will likely continue working until 65. At that time, I will have about $1,600 per month social security plus a modest retirement. I spent most of my adult life raising 4 children of widely varying ages (youngest is 15, oldest 37) so I will only have about 20 years full-time work history. I'll also have a good chunk in home equity for a home purchase. I've been to France and Italy multiple times (going to the Dordogne in May) and would love to retire in France. I'd like to spend a year renting in differnt locations when I retire. I have researched ways to do this earlier and continue working from abroad. I'm a program manager at an academic medical institution and also have several years of executive support experience. I haven't found a position that will allow this fully remote on a different time zone. I've thought about getting my TEFL certificate and teaching online from Europe, but this doesn't provide much income. Do you have any ideas/advice for someone who would like to retire early from U.S. and work remote from France in order to subsidize income?

  20. I pray people are moved to help the homeless, helpless animals. If only emotions and energy were directed toward them, especially when the weather is brutal.

  21. Raised in New Orleans, the king cake has been a tradition. Sad to say that a quality king cake is uncommon. Most are topped with an enormous amount of granulated sugar, colored purple and yellow.

  22. Hi French here, Did you know that you can adopt abandoned animals from the SPA (Society for the Protection of Animals)? These animals (cats, dogs, etc.) are spayed/neutered, microchipped, etc., which would save you additional costs. There's probably an SPA center in your area. They're located all over France, and they also have an online presence .These animals are of all ages, from kittens to seniors; there's a wide variety.
