My name is Jay Swanson – I’m an American writer living in Paris since 2017 with an earlier stint in 2012. Paris (yes the one in France) has been my home long enough that I finally earned French citizenship in 2024! You can see the vlog about my French citizenship ceremony here: https://youtu.be/e4fl9D0oUso

I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much. Now I make videos about visiting Paris on my second channel @paris.in.my.pocket and put everything else here on this channel: life in Paris, traveling in Europe, and trying to share what I’ve learned along the way. I hope you enjoyed what you found.

Links are affiliate links where they can be – meaning if you click through them and buy something, I’ll get some pennies. Thanks! (The FTC wants me to tell you that up front)

  1. Popping champagne when you complete a goal sounds fantastic. Have a Happy New Year, and good luck reaching your publishing and apartment goals! 🎉

  2. I don't do the champagne bottles, although that is a fun idea. My goal for this year is to complete a draft of my book and share it with beta readers. After that, it's time to find an editor! I look forward to your coffee table book and I know you'll keep us posted as it's appropriate. Happy winter, Jay & team. 🙂

  3. Welcome back and happy new year! Hope you had a fantastic holidays. Love your champagne bottle goals. Love motivational stuff like that! Best of luck!

  4. Ah yes, time for the Champagne bottle. Let's see I started watching you back when you originally did the 20 in 20 whenever that was…how many Champagne bottles ago was that? 😉

  5. Happy New Years Jay! I am actually, taking vino courses on the side. I finished on so far Food and Vino Pairings.

I plan to learn more French this year but mostly just maintain consistency with the goals I already have.

I like the travel vlogs but I also like these cozy ones just a day with Jay at the apartment. I hope to see more vlogs like these.

Here’s a small contribution of my thanks, New Years, and for more wool socks.

Nice to see you again Jay!

  6. I actually love that black bottle of Spanish cava! Freixenet, and it’s easy to find in US supermarkets. (My family calls it champagne anyway – don’t tell your French friends!)

  7. Love it! Disagree with your friend about Veuve…especially if you read about the history…the Widow was an early feminist.

  8. The Paris in my Pocket book is going to be awesome. I’ll be ordering Sea of the Unknown -the Follow Up as soon as it’s released, so that’s one copy sold! Best of luck with your apartment hunting! Happy New Year Jay!

  9. Jay when are you going to move out of that closet and get yourself a proper Parisian apartment. It's about time and you deserve it

  10. Well I won't be listening to her podcast! How dare she attempt to shame and dismiss one of the most popular and affordable and my favorite champagnes in the world! 😠 ❤My Veuve!

  11. My goals are less of accomplishments and more of just getting through it. I had knee replacement 2 weeks ago, so goal #1 is to rehab so I can walk well for my Paris trip in April. After that trip I’m having the other knee replaced, so goal #2 is to rehab so I can go snorkeling on my Hawaii trip in September. I’m using my travels as incentives/champagne rewards.

  12. Best wishes for 2026 Jay!!!

Hope you can open the Ruinart very soon.

I'm very much looking forward to that Paris in my pocket book!!!

  13. I live in Minnesota and haven't seen the sun in over 2 weeks which is depressing (the news is also depressing). I finally snapped and booked a cruise leaving out of Port Canaveral, FL at the end of the month. I just got back from a cruise on Dec 15 so I haven't been back very long but I already miss the sun. Luckily, I can work anywhere as long as I have access to good wifi.

As far as my goals and plans for 2026, at the beginning of December, I found out I won a trip to Paris. I filled out all the paperwork and was confirmed as the winner but the sponsor of the giveaway hasn't contacted me yet to start planning the trip. The giveaway rules say that it will be in April or May. I hope they contact me soon as I'm anxious to start planning.

After I get back from Paris, I'm going to fence in my backyard and get a dog. My last dog was a beagle and she was the best dog I've ever owned so I'd like to get another one – preferably a puppy but I'm open to adopt a rescue.

One of my main goals for 2026 is to pay off my credit card debt. I got my credit card a few years ago when my dog got sick and needed to spend 5 days at the vet hospital. It cost me $10k and I've been paying the minimum each month so I haven't made much progress on getting it paid down. I'm going to try to throw as much extra money as I can scrape up at the balance each month. I might not get the entire thing paid off this year but I'm going to try.

Have a happy new year, Jay! I'm looking forward to seeing you pop open those bottles.
